How to Calculate Greenhouse Heating

Instructions

Things You'll Need:
Tape measure
1
Measure your greenhouse. Find out the length, width, distance from the ground to the peak of the roof, distance from the ground to the eaves of the roof and the distance from the eaves to the peak of the roof.
2
Multiply length by width of each side of the greenhouse (including the roof). Add these numbers to find the total surface area of your greenhouse. Note that this is not the same as determining the square footage of your greenhouse. Instead, you'll be calculating the surface area of the entire greenhouse structure. For example, consider a greenhouse that is 10 feet wide, 20 feet long, 5 feet from the ground to the eaves, 10 feet from the ground to the peak and 7 feet from the eaves to the peak. The long sides would have a surface area of 100 square feet each, the short sides would be 75 square feet each and the roof panels would be 140 square feet each. The total surface area of the structure would be 630 square feet.
3
Subtract the average low winter temperature for your area from the minimum temperature you wish to maintain in your greenhouse. For example, if the average low for your area is 20 degrees Fahrenheit and you want to keep a steady temperature of 60 degrees, the difference would be 40 degrees.
4
Find the heat loss factor for the material your greenhouse is made from. If you don't already know yours, use the table in Resource 2 to find out.
5
Multiply the total surface area of the greenhouse by the temperature difference you found in step three. Then multiply this number by the heat loss factor from step four. This will give you the number of BTUs necessary to heat your greenhouse.
6
Divide the number of BTUs by 3.413 to find how many kilowatt hours of energy it will take to heat your greenhouse. Keep in mind that this number is only the average energy your heater will require, so be sure to purchase a heater that can function well at colder temperatures as well.
