Instructions to Roll Stitch Crochet

Hook and Yarn Choices
You can crochet the roll stitch with any yarn or hook, but when you try it for the first time it is better to be careful about your selection. Try a worsted-weight yarn; this will give you the right weight for producing this stitch because it is neither too thick nor too thin. Pick a yarn that is fairly solid in its construction; in other words, you don't want a yarn that splits easily. Acrylic yarns are probably best to start, as they rarely split when you work with them.
When you choose a crochet hook to use for this stitch, find one that has a relatively long handle. Crochet hooks with decorative handles or short handles are not very ideal for this particular stitch, because you will use the handle as you make the stitch.
Setting up the Stitch
You will need a stitch to crochet into when you make the roll stitch. To set it up, an easy way to start is to crochet a circle first. Make a crocheted circle with six single crochet stitches in it, and join with a slip stitch. Now you can work your roll stitches into this circle.
Making the Roll Stitch
To make the roll stitch, begin by yarning over several times. For an example, pull the yarn over your hook five times. Try to keep your yarn-overs even and somewhat loose. Start by making them up on the handle of your hook, and then slide them down toward the hook portion when you are finished.
Insert the hook into the next single crochet stitch, yarn over again, and draw your hook through the single crochet stitch and all five yarn-overs on your hook. When you do this, it can be easy to get the hook stuck. Try to wiggle it back and forth as you draw it through the loops, and hold the loops themselves near the base so they stay in place.
When you have drawn your hook through all of the yarn overs, make one chain stitch at the top to hold the roll stitch in place. Repeat this all the way around the circle and join with a slip stitch in the top of the first roll stitch.
